I'm a serious amateur photographer, who occasionaly wishes he were a pro! I've been shooting since the late 1970's, back in the "ancient" days of silver halide and Kodachrome. Photography is a passion with me; I only wish I had more time to persue it. But, I do what I can! So, enjoy my humble contribution to the world of digital imaging. If you see something you like, please leave a comment. If you have some advice, I'm not too old to learn!

Keep shooting!

St. Mary Catholic Church : This Gothic-style church in Massillon, Ohio was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The cornerstone was placed in 1876 and the chuch was dedicated in 1880.
No photo can convey the awesome presence of this building. You must be standing in front of it to appreciated it. It's almost like the building was lifted from England or France and transported to northeast Ohio!
The black appearance was caused by decades of soot and pollution from the coal-fired steel mill blast furnaces that once were common to the area. The mills are gone, but the church is still here. I believe the original color of the building was a light tan or gray; if you look at the lower part of the structure, you'll see that the higher you look, the blacker it gets. Personally, I think the black adds to the buildings "personality", and contributes to the imposing Gothic style.
The cost to remove the blackness would be enormous, and could probably compromise the structural integrity of the building...so black it will remain!

I would like to express my gratutude to Father Bob and the other parishioners of St. Mary for granting me permission to take these photos.

Some Backyard Birds : These are few of the avian visitors to my backyard, natural "studio". They are usually quite cooperative, but it still can be a challenge to get a good, usable shot of these beautiful but fast-moving creatures! All the photos were taken through a clean window of our home (unless noted otherwise) using a tripod and Olympus digital equipment exclusively.

The Chapel at Mercy Medical Center : This lovely, quiet chapel at a local hospital in Canton, Ohio, was once part of the Timken family's lavish home, which was later converted into Timken Mercy Hospital, which then became the present-day Mercy Medical Center. What was a chapel doing in a fancy home? Because it was originally...a swimming pool! Yes, a very large ceramic tile-lined pool.
